ATS readability

Check whether a résumé PDF exposes selectable text in a sensible order without claiming universal ATS compatibility.

What the check can tell you

Experiencer’s PDF readability workflow checks whether a PDF contains extractable text and whether that text can be read in a plausible sequence. It helps catch image-only output, missing text, and layout choices that produce an obviously confusing extraction order.

It cannot certify acceptance by every applicant-tracking system. ATS products use different parsers, field models, scoring rules, and employer configurations. A readable PDF can still be interpreted differently by a particular system.

Run a practical sanity check

  1. Export or print the final résumé to PDF.
  2. Open the PDF and confirm the text is selectable.
  3. Select all text, copy it, and paste it into a plain-text editor.
  4. Read from the beginning. Confirm the name, contact details, section headings, roles, organizations, dates, and bullets appear in a sensible order.
  5. Search for several distinctive words from the résumé.

If the order jumps between unrelated columns, return to the editor’s structure tree. The DOM/tree order—not the visual left-to-right impression alone—controls extraction.

Improve readability

When the visual and text results disagree

A résumé can look correct while its extraction order is poor. Simplify multi-column regions, move the most important content earlier in the structure tree, and create a new PDF. If a font is missing in the PDF, switch to a supported built-in font or verify that the export destination can load the chosen resource.

Prerequisite: Export or print the résumé. For persistent PDF problems, see Troubleshooting.
